WITH A SMILE…

I remember every little detail, it happened when I was sober.
The man without money didn’t accept my offer of bread and wine.
He said; “Man I was hungry, but now I’ve had enough.
See these people walking by, that’s what I call tough.
They try to ignore me as if I did something wrong.
But now I need my time to finish this song.”

“I hope I can hear the people say;
He died with a smile on his face.
But I hope it’s not too late to turn another page.”

I used to drink my beer in a corner of a café near the harbour.
With sounds on the other side of the wall, like there’s something going on.
My barely dressed neighbour drank coffee with a sound.
She moved her head, a heavy fragrance all around.
I almost had to pay her when she charged me for her smile.
And all she said, when she left after a while was:

“I hope I can hear the people say;
She died with a smile on her face.
Never too far ahead, but from day to day.”

“They can’t take it away any more.
I’ve had my share of satisfaction.
But I hope it’s not too late to turn another page.”

I did not expect the words, these people told me.
Do you believe the stories you see on tv?

Fiction and reality, are two different worlds.
It’s easier to believe, in things we can see.

You’re caught by software, in an interactive game.
Destiny is changed by a touch of the screen.

The same old story, but with different names.
After so many years, after so many dreams.

I hope I can hear the people say;
“He died with a smile on his face.
Never too far ahead, but from day to day.”

They can’t take it away any more.
I’ve had my share of satisfaction.
And I hope it’s not too late to turn another page.
